Anyone else interested in joining me for the fun? I've never been to this place before, but I'm told you need to bring a helmet, leather jacket (which I don't have yet...I need to borrow one soon), boots, long pants, etc. I think its only $10 to get in and $10 to race (tech card).

Here's my write-up of the day:

WHERE:
Rural Shade is an 1800 acre ATV park located near Corsicana, TX. Lucky for me, its only a 2 hour and 15 minute drive from my house.

TRACK CONDITIONS:
The weather was sunny and a bit warm (in the mid 90s). They didn’t have a working water truck, so the dirt drag strip got a bit dusty with each pass. But that’s no problem as long as you stayed out in front! LOL

The dirt drag strip is 300’ long and the 2 lanes are plenty wide. There were no lights, timers or rails, but the track was prepped nice and smooth for these races. The strip has a hardpack bottom with a very thin layer of loose dirt/rocks on top. Thankfully, this track was much smoother for these Labor Day races than it was the last time I visited this ATV park in late May.

THE COMPETITION:
Only 7 quads signed up for the 800cc open class drag race. Due to the low turn-out, they lumped the utes and sport quads together for this class. As I recall, the line-up included a drag Raptor 734cc, FastFatBoy’s V-force (sharp looking quad with sharp graphics, a few bolt-on goodies and some GREAT REAR TIRES), my Twin Peaks 800, a heavily modded mud bog Prairie (Kale), a brand new Outlander 800R with a glass pack exhaust pipe (only had 3 hours on it), another Outlander 800R XT (bone stock), and a yellow Outlander 800 (a few years old).

You may be asking “WHY DIDN’T FASTFATBOY BRING HIS DRAG PRAIRIE 730?” Good question. It appears that Jay was just SKEERED of getting whooped by my Twin Peaks again as the last time we raced on this particular track, I beat him good! LOL j/k J Actually, Jay tried hard to get his Prairie ready for this race, but he had some mechanical problems while assembling the motor (I’ll let Jay explain it further if he wants to).

THE RACES
It was set-up as double elimination and they drew names for the order of races and flipped a coin for lane choices.

FIRST PASS
Me and the drag Raptor were up first. The owner of this quad told me he just put it together about 3 weeks ago and had it clocked at 101 mph on an asphault drag strip. It was clearly the fastest quad entered in the drag races, but it had trouble hooking up during warm-ups/practice. Not sure, but the rear tires looked like Razr 2’s or something like that. Much to my surprise, I beat this Raptor twice during warm-ups/practice due to his tire-spin issues off the line.

We lined up, they signalled the start and then I pulled away from him. About ½ way down, I thought I had a good lead on him…next thing I know, I was 50 feet from the finish line and I looked back…he must have hit 3rd gear b/c he was coming up FAST!!! He caught up to me right at the finish line. It was a VERY close race…I think he only beat me by a foot or two. (of course, it would’ve been much worse if he had good traction off the starting line…lol).

FINAL ROUND
After that, I proceeded to win all of my remaining races until I met the same Raptor in the final round. In this final race, I again pulled away from him right off the starting line (while the Raptor was spinning) and then he blew my doors off near the end…this time, he beat me by a wider margin (perhaps ¾ or 1 quad length). So I ended up taking home 2nd place out of 7 quads. Considering the competition I had, it was not a bad day.

SIDE NOTES ABOUT OTHER QUADS
1) OUTY 800Rs
I was VERY IMPRESSED with the piped 800R Outlander...bone stock except for a glass pack pipe, it was just as strong as my quad off the line and I only pulled away about 1/2 way down the track. I'm not exactly sure, but I think I was only able to beat him by 1 quad length or so. Remember that this 800R only had 3 hours on it, so it was still breaking in. Every time that I saw this 800R (with a pipe) race the other 800R XT (bone stock), this 800R (piped) won by maybe a quad length...so apparently the glass pack exhaust pipe helped it.

2) V-Force
The Rear tires on FastFatBoy's V-force hooked up very hard on this track. I wish I had them on my quad. The first time Mikey drove the V-force during warm-ups/practice, he stood it straight up! lol I don't recall the brand of these tires, but they hooked up great!

3) Other Prairie
This quad was set-up for deep mud bogs (relocated radiator, snorkels above airbox, etc.), but it ran very quick for a mud bog quad! I raced it when he had 28" silverbacks and I was able to pull away and beat him pretty badly (4 quad lengths or so). He later swapped out the tires to stock Outy tires and it ran much faster...I only beat him by 1 quad length that time.

AFTERWARDS
It was a fun day of drag racing, but the best was yet to come. I got to take my kids trail riding in the park. This was my 2 kids very first time to go trail riding at an ATV park. I recently bought them some small Chinese ATVs and before this day, they had only been able to ride in my backyard. Obviously, riding ATVs at an 1800 acre ATV park was much more fun. Although I've ridden at this park a few times before, I quickly realized this park seems SOOO MUCH BIGGER when only riding at 10 mph! LOL

We had a blast except when the throttle un-expectantly got stuck at WIDE OPEN on my son’s 50cc quad and it launched off the side of a semi-dry pond! I was very glad that my son fell off well before the ATV became an airplane. He was a bit scared, but unharmed. In any case, my kids were wearing all of their safety gear…and now they better understand why its important to always wear their safety gear! We had a fun day that I’m sure won’t be forgotten for a long time. I hope you enjoyed the write-up.

Pics coming soon!

Happy trails...:)

Drag race at Rural Shade on Labor Day (Monday)

Rural Shade near Corsicana, TX is having several events this weekend, including drag racing to be held at 11am on Monday (Labor Day). I raced there a year ago in the Can Am Nationals and had a lot of fun. The track is a dirt drag strip with a hard pack bottom and a thin layer of soft dirt on top. As I recall its not a groomed track, but its fairly smooth except for a small hump near the finish line...hopefully they will smooth that hump out before the Monday race.

I'm seriously considering going to this drag race. Tonite, I spoke to a friend that I drag race from time to time (he has a very fast Prairie similar to mine, but his is set-up for drag racing only) and he and his friends are thinking seriously about coming to this drag race...his buddies have VERY fast sport quads (Banshees, Raptors, etc.). Should be a FUN TIME!

Anyway, please post here if you are thinking about going.

Anyway, I did some searches today and here are the 3 tracks in Texas that I found currently offer ATV mud drag races. If anyone on this forum has ever raced or currently races in these events, please post below and let me know what you think of these events. I'm very interested in giving this sport a try (especially if I can find someone else to try it with me).

Below is a little write-up of this event...

FASTFATBOY

First off, I have to say it was great fun to finally meet and race with Jay (aka FASTFATBOY) after chatting with him on various atv forums for the last few years. I was VERY impressed with his drag Prairie (Fundy 730)...it was everything I was expecting it to be and more...it looked lean and mean, sounded awesome and ran fast! Jay and I have been looking for a place in TX to meet up and drag race our quads since last Spring when we both installed BBKs in our quads.

PRAIRIE 730 VS. TWINPEAKS 800

During practice this morning, Jay and I raced each other a few times...much to my surprise, I was able to beat his quad both times (not by alot...maybe 1 quad length or less). Once the dirt drag races began, we raced another 2 or 3 times and I was able to beat him every time, but it was VERY CLOSE. I would only beat him by about 1/2 quad or less during the last few runs we had. No doubt, his Fundy 730 is very strong...he even let me ride it and I thought HOLY COW, this thing is so much different than a normal quad...the front end is strapped down and the rear swingarm has a 4" extension...very cool! I'm sure our race results would have been different if Jay and I weighed the same (I think he weighs more than a 100 lbs more than me, so I probably would have gotten spanked bad today if Jay put a smaller rider on his quad! lol)

US VS THEM

Jay and I both entered 2 classes today: 500cc and Up Sport Quads, and the 661cc and Up Ute Class. The only reason we did the sport quad class was it was so small and they were asking for anyone to race them (a DS650 and a 400ex). Needless to say, we killed them easily! lol I took 1st and Jay took 2nd in that class.

The Ute class was pretty big - 12 quads or so (I think). I think Jay was picked to race first (I don't recall who he raced)...they also called my name and another guy to race next, so I lined up behind Jay in the left lane (most people prefered the left lane)...The Outy 800 put up a stink about me getting in the left lane, so I offered it to him...no problem I said (he put up a big fuss for nothing IMO)...but he insisted we get an official and flip a coin for the lanes...ok I said. He won the toss and took the left lane. I didn't really care about getting the right lane, but it irked me that he made a big stink about it... Well, I easily pulled away from that Outy 800 right off the bat and stared him down as I blew past him!!! I even STOOD STRAIGHT UP during the last 1/2 of the track to prove my point...it was not even close! LOL

Next thing I know, the Outy started crying about how unfair it was that me and Jay were racing in that class on our modified quads... he complained to the officials and then to us too! What a baby! He said we should be in an unlimited class, but I reminded him that they didn't have an unlimited class except for the UTV class (no atvs raced in that class - it was only Rhinos and such). He said our class was for the 661cc and up STOCK quads, but I reminded him the rules/sign-up sheet did NOT say stock...his reply was that STOCk was what they intended! LOL This guy was probably 40 y.o., but acted like he was 10! LOL

...they eventually made me and Jay sit out while others raced each other...later, we raced the ones left (not the crybaby guy) plus some Renegades. One renegade was stock and others beat him easily...the other renegade was driven by a guy named Seth Russell (I heard that Seth is on Team Bad Company). Anyway, Seth's renegade was VERY fast and I give him props for that. Seth would not admit to any internal upgrades. lol (not that it matters, but I've raced Shawn Hess's modded renegade several times this year in my XC races and I usually beat him easily to the first turn, so I'm quite sure Seth had something special done to his Renegade…no way it was stock internally). Seth admitted it had a pipe and a "chip" (probably a dobeck)...but other than that, he denied any other motor work.

I raced Seth's renegade 4 times...I ended up winning 2 and he won 2. The way it worked was double elimination...he jumped the line on the 1st run and he beat me barely...he admitted jumping the line to me, so I asked for a re-run and he was cool with it. The next time, I beat him and I sat out while everyone raced each other. Last guy standing was this renegade...he had to beat me twice they said to win and I say...no need, just do 1 race, winner takes the class. he said ok of course. i beat him by 1 foot (1/2 tire)...very close race...anyway, i even went ont he side of the track where the winners go and he went the way the losers go...I got to the starting line all happy (b/c I won the final round)...BUT they officials at end of track said the renegade won!?! I told them no way...so they asked the renegade and he said "I'm not sure, it was so close!"...total BS!

We raced once more and he got a better start than me...he barely won and so he took 1st in our class, i got 2nd and Jay got 3rd. Fun day, but I think my quad was just as fast as that modded renegade...kinda disappointed that I didn't beat him on the last race. Oh well, that's racing...you can't win them all!

CONCLUSION

All in all, the Kaw. V-twins took the top 2 spots in the Sport quad Class and 2 of the top 3 spots in the 661cc and Up Ute Class...not a bad showing for the Kawies at the Can-Am National drag races! :OhYeah

But we already moved the race to the 12th. Now, that weekend we will race back to back on sunday. My question is who wants to party Sat night. They said something about some guys from houston comming out and doing the mudding event on sat, so i say we have a big bomb fire down by the river and get a party on!!! Sport, Mud, side by side, it don't matter... just get everyone together for a night ride.

So add any suggestions, if your comming, if your not or what ever.
later

This will be a money race day as well as include the Test and Tune same as we did a few weeks ago. There are fast bikes from all over that are coming as well as a lot of locals. I heard rumors that Brooks will be here again with a few of his group. I have not heard if Dax will be back at this time for this saturday. He ran some good time at Sate Capitol Raceway in Baton Rouge on the 11th.

We are getting the track ready for some big changes as far as lane widening and a even longer dressed up shut down area. The plan right now is to spend the 17th prepping the track for the 18th money races. The long range weather forecast looks good so far.

The schedule so far is to start T & T at 10am and start the racing at 1pm. After the money races are done then back to open T & T until dark. This worked great the last time we did it this way.
