    PoPo Running Hot!

    Ok Guys,

My 06' 700 EFI keeps overheating and i'm having trouble figuring out why, I dont know exactly how hot (I'm getting ready to put a temp guage on it) but it is triggering the idiot light and turning the overflow bottle into a green geyser.

It got hot at the Nationals (radiator clogged with mud) and puked a fair amount of coolant, I thuroughly cleaned the radiator, refilled it, and burped the system numerous times and am pretty sure I got all of the air out of it.

It is still getting hot! The fan comes on in about the first 5 minutes and stays on most almost constantly. I ohmed out the temp sensor and it is in spec. and the fan amp draw is in check as well.

I was concerned about a cracked head or blown head gasket but there is no oil in the water or water in the oil. I also ran a compression test for the same concern and it has good compression. I put a thermostat in it and and checked the old one and it was opening fine.

It also seems to have lost a lot of pep so I was concerned about possible excessive exhaust back pressure so I switched between the OEM pipe and the Aaen pipe and noticed little diffrence in power and it is still getting hot??

    Any suggestions are appreciated???

My buddy's PoPo was doing that, turned out to be a bad radiator cap.

Just a suggestion but did you make sure you had the back side of the radiator clean.

Take a flashlight and look at the radiator behind the fan, sometimes the mud will collect

there and will stop air flow.

    Re: PoPo Running Hot!

I had trouble getting the radiator clean by the fan.  Then my fan was not running right, I ended up getting a new fan that was more powerful and relocated the radiator because I was tired off trying to get behind the winch and then the radiator cover for a good clean.

    Re: PoPo Running Hot!

    Guys,

Thanks for the input, i'm confident the radiator is clean as I pulled the front storage box, fan and shroud and blew it out very well. As far as getting behind the winch plate and to the outer edges of the radiator it is a pain in the A$$ but relocating is not really an option for me because I need the storage and rack space. I ride more trails than mud because of my location buy I do plant it in the nasty stuff every chance I get.

I made a "spray wand" out of 1/4" copper tubing with a short 90 degree bend at the spray end. That little sucker sprays like hell and you can actually get inside of the fan shroud and blow the mud out.

Thanks for all of you help,

    Re: PoPo Running Hot!

I actually had to pull my radiator off and then pull the fan and shroud and rinse it from both sides for like an hour.  I was amazed at how much mud had built up.  It ran cooler than ever after that.  It also sounds like you still may have an air pocket as well.  I would try and burp it again.

Any chance the coolant isn't circulating properly? Maybe a water pump issue?

I know you say it's clean but you would be amazed how muc bakes inside the coils. I had to soak and spray a radiator for 3 days one time to get it clean enough to see through with a flash light. I put it in a tub to soften the mud up. Some of the clay we ride in hardens like a rock.

    Just a thought.

    Re: PoPo Running Hot!

    David,

I'm pretty sure you were right!! I pulled the radiator, plugged the inlet & outlet and have been soaking it in a "tote" since last Saturday. I pull it out, spray the $h!t out of it and more & more mud is still coming out of it. I did order a temp guage for it so I can keep a little better eye on the temp. and I am going to wire a rocker switch in as well to manually turn on the fan.

Must be something about that East Texas mud from the Nationals!! Us South Texas boys dont get to play in that stuff very often, closet thing we have is Mud Buddys near Halletsville, about 110 miles east of us. There aint much water riding out there but they do have some pretty tough holes.

I did have anoyher question for you guys concerning the fan? My fan seems to be functioning fine, pulls strong, no bearing noise, and I will check the brushes while it is out of the bike. What is your thought of running the fan as a "pusher" while starionary?? Im wiring a manual switch in any way and thought about adding a relay and using a 3 position rocker switch to reverse the polarity and fan direction?? I'm probably pi$$ing in the wind with this idea as it would pull heat directly from the exhaust manifold through the radiator?

    Just thinking out loud here??

I found and bought a bike for my 10 yr old (06' Hawkeye from a guy I know, way too cheap and not abused) but I'm still looking for a 450 Griz for the 13 yr old as well as a Pink PoPo 50 for my little girl.
