Took Big Blue to the Dyno today

We had trouble getting full runs out of my quad, so the results are questionable. As you can see in the dyno chart, top speed was only 25mph! lol  I ran it on the paved road in front of the dyno shop to warm it up and reached 71 mph just messing around (had to slow down b/c I caught up to a truck! lol)  Anyway, not sure if my belt was slipping on the dyno or what?

Last summer my quad made 72.7 rwhp on the same dyno...today's best run was 85.4 rwhp.

if those are legit numbers thats alot of power!  but I dont trust dyno sheets that the torque and hp dont cross...  also AFR thats "tuned" on the dyno is lean when actually riding.  at least on a 2smoker

Re: Took Big Blue to the Dyno today

    Ken,

After chatting on another forum about my problems getting upto full speed on the dyno yesterday, I believe the most likely culprit is that the dyno was set to apply load to my quad even tho the operator said it was set on inertia (no added load).  That seems to be the most likely explanation given the fact that I reached 71 mph on the road just a few minutes before putting it on the dyno.  Its a bummer that I didn't get a full run out of the dyno...would have been interesting to see the HP and TQ numbers from a good run.  Oh well, I will use the a/f numbers I got to help me rejet...so its not a total loss.  I appears I'm a bit too rich, so I need to install smaller main jets.  Hopefully that will get rid of the stumble I heard on the road at about 40 or 50mph.  Once I get the jetting right, I'll be ready for this Saturday's sand drag races.

Are you thinking about going to the sand drag races on Sat?  Win or lose, I bet it will be fun time seeing and racing the other fast quads.

    Happy trails...:)

Mikey, personally I don't care about the HP numbers either, whenever my stuff has been on a dyno it was just for the A/F readings. But I have to say that is one weird looking graph. Indifferent

Re: Took Big Blue to the Dyno today

I agree, the main benefit of using a dyno is for tuning purposes.  On a positive note, I was able to use the a/f readings from Sunday's dyno runs to help me rejet my carbs last night...took it for a spin this morning and no more stumbles at 40 or 50mph.  Looks like I'm fairly close with the jetting...altho I'd like to go back to a dyno to be sure (unfortunately I called Rage ATV and their dyno slots are booked solid until next week).  So I'll just drag race on Sat. like it is.

    Happy trails...:)

Was your graph from above from Rage? Do they do any actual tuning / jetting for you or just run it and show you what you have?

I was worried that you guys might get some rain, but it looks like now that it "might" rain on Friday and then be clear all weekend.

    Good Luck!

Re: Took Big Blue to the Dyno today

    JEFF,

The graph posted above is the dyno sheet from the dyno located in Industry, TX (owned by TC Pistole).  Since we had problems on that dyno last Sunday, I was thinking about putting my quad on the dyno at Rage ATV and that is why I called them today (but Rage ATV is booked up this week, as I said above).

    INDUSTRY DYNO TESTING (Industry, TX)

The Industry TX dyno does not do the jetting work.  They simply hook up your quad to their dyno and they operate the dyno (while I sit on my quad and rev up the motor!...yeehaw!! lol).  They also allow me to bring my own tools and rejet the carbs while its on their machine...then they operate the dyno again to see if I made any HP gains.  This is what I did last summer and it worked out great...that is why Industry TX dyno is much cheaper than going to Rage ATV, but the downside is the longer drive for me to get to Industry, TX.

    RAGE ATV (Splendora, TX)

As far as I know, Rage ATV does not allow you to bring your own tools and rejet the carbs.  Your only choice is to either let Rage ATV do basic dyno runs for approx. $75 for 3 runs (and then I go home and rejet with that info), or else you can pay Rage ATV to tune the carbs for you on the dyno (which is about $165 or so).  I put my old P650 on Rage ATV's dyno for 3 basic runs a few years ago and it worked out great...I took that info home and rejetted my carbs.

Yeah, I was hoping the weather will be nice at Gator Run for Saturday's sand drags.  I'm sure the other events held at TX Mudfest would not mind getting the rain, but I do! lol

    Happy trails...:)

Re: Took Big Blue to the Dyno today

    *** MYSTERY SOLVED!!! ***

The dyno operator sent me an email this morning to let me know that he found the problem with my last dyno runs. He was running some diagnostic checks on his Superflow dyno and discovered that the (electronically controlled) load cell is inexplicably applied whenever the inertia setting is turned on. He doesn't know why its doing this, but he found a solution (unplug the load cell). Anyway, that explains why my dyno sheet looked so odd (it was applying load when it was not supposed to). He offered free dyno runs on my next visit, so I'll probably take him up on the offer...need to check my jetting again anyway.

I'm glad to know it was not my quad that was causing the problems we had on the dyno.

    Happy trails...:)
