    01 honda foreman help needed

I was riding in water. When i pulled out on the bank and stopped the engine was running rough. Checked all usuall suspects and nothing. (carb, oil, & so forth) When i crancked it back up it would not shift will it was running. It works fine as long as the engine is off and only the key is on. The engine was making a funny noise also like something was binding in the engine. it wouldnt idle had to keep it reved to keep it going. Once back to the house it started working again. Ok so must have been water in a plug some where. Now that was 3 weeks ago and went out to ride it yesterday and same thing wont shift. Anyone have any ideas im not even sure where to start looking. I thought gear shift motor but it shifts fun without the engine running. Any help would be a big help because if not i have to take it to the dealership and thats gonna cost alot of money. it also feels like something is draging the engine down when its idiling it was making a funny sound the day it happened something like a bearing or something binding. If you keep it reved it was fine but let it idle the engine would die and make the screaching sound and the engine would jump.

I would pull the clutch basket out and check it. Pay close attention to the one way bearing. As to it running bad I would also drain the carb. If you do not have it plugged on the bottom it will let water in and cause it to run rough.

ok its not water in the carb because i ran it all the way back to the truck and then once i got home. So check the clutch basket what am i looking for? damage wise or will it be noticable?
